Rainfall in the countryside will take time to reach drainage systems with as much as 95% being absorbed into the soil, while in an urban environment as little as 5% will be absorbed with 95% immediately 'running-off' into the drainage systems and rivers. Increased urbanisation and changes to rainfall patterns has resulted in more flooding events at huge monetary and personal cost. Storm water run-off also tends to wash pollutants into river courses and slows the re-filling of valuable underground aquifers.

The Interim Code of Practise for Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS) has been created to reduce the flooding risk associated with hard landscaping and it must now be adhered to when creating or re-furbishing hard surfaced area in the front garden of houses or the creation of car parks. Our clay Hydrosmart Permeable Paving systems will comply with this planning requirement and give all the advantages you would normally associate with clay paving:
  • Permanent colours that do not fade (unlike concrete pavers)
  • Excellent slipping, skidding and abrasion resistance
  • Stronger than concrete pavers
  • No efflorescence
  • Resistant to degradation from oil and petrol spills
  • More environmentally friendly than concrete pavers or black top surfaces
Blockleys' clay Hydrosmart Permeable Paving system encourages water to slowly cascade through the construction, rather than immediately running off the surface. This captured water will then be slowly discharged into either the subsoil (the Hydrosmart Permeable Paving infiltration system) or via a small drainage pipe directly into a water course at 'green field run-off rates' (the Hydrosmart Permeable Paving tanked system).

Laying Procedure

1. Line excavation with a geotextile (infiltration method) or a geomembrane (tanked method)
2. Place 4/20mm coarse graded aggregate roadbase in the excavation
3. Roll (without vibration) to achieve a flat surface

4. Cover the surface with a geotextile
5. Form the bedding course of 2/6mm grit
6. Spread the 2/6mm grit to an uncompacted thickness of about 65mm

7. Lay Hydrosmart Permeable Pavers to the required bond pattern, install edge infill pieces
8. Brush 2/6mm grit into the joints
9. Compact the permeable pavers with 2 or 3 passes of a plate compactor. Brush more grit into the joints and repeat
