The need to reduce a building's carbon footprint is an essential part of the Draft Climate Change Bill. With a target of a 60% cut in carbon emissions by 2050 (on 1990 levels) it is essential that domestic heating systems become much more efficient.
The Schlüter Bekotec hydronic underfloor heating system already delivers huge efficiencies now and when coupled with ground or air source heat pumps can substantially reduce a buildings carbon footprint. The key to this underfloor heating water system is the ultra thin screed. From only 35mm thick this is almost half the normal depth of most traditional wet underfloor heating installations. This means that the water flow temperatures required to heat a room are much lower, typically 35-40 centigrade. In a more typical wet underfloor heating system the flow temperatures will need to be 45-55 centigrade which requires a lot more energy. The lower flow temperatures also means that the Schlüter Bekotec low temperature underfloor heating water system will work very well with air and ground heat source pumps whose most efficient output temperature are below 40 centigrade. At this temperature the heat pumps can be working at up to 350% efficiency, while at temperatures of 50 centigrade the efficiency is much less. The thin screed also means that rooms will heat up much quicker . The more traditional wet underfloor heating installations will need to warm 65mm or more of screed before the room starts to heat. Thinner screeds also speed the installation process, reduces the required construction height and limits the amount of cement being used in the screed. Cement is one of the major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. Underfloor central heating systems provide wonderful draft free heating. The whole floor acts as a radiator so you no longer have the drafts caused by radiator convection currents. You also save space and improve the room's aesthetics by no longer having radiators! The Schlüter Bekotec low temperature underfloor heating water system comes with extensive control systems that allow you to control temperature, heating times and also set two temperature levels by individual room, zone and by day. Significant emissions savings can be made with appropriate programming. We can offer a full planning service with heat loss calculations and layout plans for your project. Simply provide us with your projects plans, building orientation, planned floor surface finishes and the structures thermal U values. We will do the rest.
